The Bubble in Poker: How to Survive and Exploit It

The bubble is one of the most important stages of a poker tournament. It is the moment when only a few players need to bust before everyone remaining reaches the money.

For example, if 100 players remain and 99 players get paid, you are on the bubble. One elimination can completely change the value of every chip at the table.

And this is where poker becomes much more than simply playing good cards.

🫧 What Makes the Bubble So Special?

The main difference between normal tournament play and the bubble is risk premium.

Losing chips can hurt you much more than gaining the same number of chips helps you. This is especially true for medium stacks.

A player with 20 BB doesn't want to risk their entire tournament life against another 20 BB stack with a marginal hand just to win a pot.

Meanwhile, the big stack can put enormous pressure on everyone.

This creates opportunities.

🏆 The Big Stack: Become the Bully

If you are the chip leader or one of the biggest stacks, the bubble can be extremely profitable.

Players with medium and short stacks often become afraid of busting before the money. You can use this fear against them.

You should consider:

Opening more frequently against players who clearly want to survive.

Applying pressure with raises and re-raises.

Attacking medium stacks who cannot comfortably call off their tournament life.

Stealing blinds and antes more aggressively.

Putting maximum pressure on players who are trying to ladder.

But aggression doesn't mean playing every hand.

Your goal is to make your opponents face difficult decisions for their tournament life.

🧠 The Medium Stack: The Most Difficult Position

Being a medium stack on the bubble can be uncomfortable.

You have enough chips to survive, but not enough to attack everyone without consequences.

This is where many players make a huge mistake: they become too passive.

They stop opening marginal hands, fold too much, and simply wait for the money.

The problem?

Your stack slowly disappears through blinds and antes.

Instead of trying to survive at any cost, focus on selective aggression.

Choose good spots, attack weaker players, and avoid unnecessary confrontations with stacks that can eliminate you.

⚔️ The Short Stack: Don't Panic

Being short-stacked on the bubble doesn't mean you should fold everything.

If you have 5–10 BB, waiting for premium hands can be dangerous.

Your stack has less and less fold equity every orbit.

Look for situations where you can shove profitably, especially when:

You are first into the pot.

Players behind you are tight.

The big stacks are attacking everyone.

You have enough fold equity to win the pot without a showdown.

Your goal isn't simply to survive.

Your goal is to maximize your chances of getting into the money with a playable stack.

💰 ICM Changes Everything

The bubble is where ICM (Independent Chip Model) becomes especially important.

Chips don't have a linear monetary value.

Winning 10 BB doesn't necessarily increase your tournament equity as much as losing 10 BB decreases it.

That's why a hand can be a profitable chip-EV decision but a bad tournament-EV decision.

For example, calling an all-in with a marginal hand might be mathematically profitable in chips, but if losing means you bust on the bubble, the risk can be much greater than the potential reward.

Understanding this difference is one of the biggest steps toward becoming a stronger tournament player.

🎯 Who Should You Attack?

Don't just look at your cards.

Look at your opponents' stacks.

The best bubble targets are often players who:

1. Are extremely short-stacked

They may be desperate to survive and therefore play very tightly.

2. Are medium stacks

They have the most to lose from confrontation and can be heavily affected by ICM pressure.

3. Are playing scared

This is perhaps the most important factor.

A player with 15 BB who is terrified of busting can sometimes be easier to exploit than a confident player with 8 BB.

Final Thoughts

The bubble is one of the most profitable stages of tournament poker if you understand what is really happening.

Don't think:

"I need to survive."

Think:

"How can I maximize my tournament equity while exploiting the players who are afraid to bust?"

Big stacks should apply pressure.

Medium stacks should choose their battles carefully.

Short stacks should preserve fold equity and look for profitable opportunities.

And everyone should understand ICM.

The bubble rewards players who can combine mathematics, stack awareness, psychology, and aggression.

Don't be afraid of the bubble. Learn to become the player everyone else is afraid of.

泡沫阶段确实考验玩家的胆识和策略,大堆玩家确实可以利用中短堆的恐惧来掌握主动。
