5-Bet Shoves in Poker: When to Push All-In

The 5-bet shove is one of the strongest and most aggressive moves in poker. It usually represents an extremely strong range, but in the right situations, it can also be used as a powerful bluff. Knowing when to 5-bet all-in can help you win big pots and put maximum pressure on your opponents.

What Is a 5-Bet Shove?

A 5-bet shove happens when the action goes something like this:

Open → 3-bet → 4-bet → 5-bet all-in.

For example, you raise preflop, your opponent 3-bets, you 4-bet, and they respond by moving all-in. Depending on the exact action, stack sizes, and positions, this can be a very high-leverage decision.

When Should You 5-Bet Shove?

The most obvious situation is when you have a premium hand such as AA, KK, or sometimes QQ and AK. Against aggressive opponents, these hands can often be strong enough to play for stacks preflop.

However, you should not automatically shove every time you have a strong hand. Position, stack depth, opponent tendencies, and tournament situation all matter.

Stack Size Is Extremely Important

A 5-bet shove makes much more sense with relatively short or medium stacks.

For example, with 30–50 big blinds, getting all the money in preflop can be quite normal. With 100+ big blinds, however, a 5-bet shove represents much more risk and requires a stronger reason.

Always consider the effective stack before making the decision.

5-Bet Shoving as a Bluff

The 5-bet shove does not always have to be a premium hand.

Against players who 4-bet too frequently, some hands with strong blockers can occasionally be used as 5-bet bluffs. Ace-x hands are particularly interesting because holding an ace reduces the number of combinations of AA and AK your opponent can have.

But this should be an advanced adjustment, not a standard play. If your opponent rarely folds to 5-bets, bluffing becomes expensive very quickly.

Read Your Opponent

Player tendencies are extremely important.

Against a tight player, a 5-bet usually represents enormous strength. If they suddenly put their entire stack in, hands like AA, KK, and sometimes AK can dominate their range.

Against an aggressive regular, however, the situation can be completely different. They may be capable of 4-betting light or turning weaker hands into bluffs.

Understanding your opponent's range is more important than simply looking at your own cards.

Don't 5-Bet Just to Show Strength

One common mistake is using the 5-bet shove because you want to look aggressive.

Poker is not about making the biggest possible bet. Every aggressive action should have a purpose.

Before shoving, ask yourself:

  • What hands will my opponent call with?

  • What hands will they fold?

  • How often are they 4-betting?

  • What is my equity against their calling range?

  • How deep are the effective stacks?

  • Is this a cash game or a tournament?

If you cannot answer these questions, slowing down may be better.

Tournament Considerations

In tournaments, 5-bet shoves become even more complicated because of ICM.

Near the bubble or final table, players may be unwilling to risk their tournament life with marginal hands. This can make certain 5-bet bluffs more effective against opponents who are capable of folding.

At the same time, you should be careful about risking a huge portion of your stack without a strong reason.

Final Thoughts

The 5-bet shove is a powerful weapon, but it should not be used randomly. The best players understand that the strength of the move comes from the combination of hand strength, stack size, position, opponent tendencies, and tournament context.

Use 5-bet shoves when the situation supports them, not simply because you want to apply maximum pressure. Sometimes the strongest move in poker is knowing when not to put your entire stack in the middle.
