HOW TO PLAY AGAINST REGULARS IN POKER

Playing against recreational players is one thing. Playing against regulars is a completely different challenge.

Regs understand ranges, position, bet sizing, and exploitative adjustments. You can’t simply wait for strong hands and expect them to pay you off. To beat regulars, you need to think one step ahead.

🔥 1. Pay Attention to Their Tendencies

Not every regular plays the same way.

Some are aggressive and constantly apply pressure. Others are tight and rarely take unnecessary risks. Some overfold to aggression, while others defend too wide.

Look for patterns:

How often do they 3-bet?

Do they overfold to continuation bets?

How do they play turns and rivers?

Do they bluff missed draws?

How do they react to aggression?

The more accurate your reads, the easier it becomes to exploit them.

🎯 2. Don’t Become Predictable

Regulars are constantly looking for weaknesses in your strategy.

If you always continuation bet the flop, they will start floating and attacking later streets.

If you only 3-bet premium hands, they will fold everything that doesn’t have strong equity.

If you always give up when you miss the flop, they will put maximum pressure on you.

Mix your strategy. Keep your ranges balanced and avoid giving your opponents easy information.

🧠 3. Fight for Position

Position becomes even more valuable against competent opponents.

When you have position, you can control the size of the pot, gather more information before making decisions, and apply pressure on later streets.

Avoid unnecessarily building huge pots out of position against players who know how to exploit positional weaknesses.

💰 4. Attack Their Weaknesses

You don’t need to “outplay” every regular.

Instead, identify where they are making mistakes and attack those spots.

For example:

A regular who folds too much to river bets → bluff more.

A regular who calls too wide → value bet thinner.

A regular who 3-bets too aggressively → 4-bet or call strategically and let them overplay their range.

A regular who plays too passively → apply consistent pressure.

Poker is not about proving that you are better. It’s about making the most profitable decisions.

⚔️ 5. Don’t Turn It Into a Battle of Egos

One of the biggest mistakes against regulars is trying to “win” every confrontation.

Someone 3-bets you? You don’t have to fight back every time.

Someone raises your continuation bet? You don’t have to defend your ego.

Choose your battles carefully.

A strong poker player understands that folding is sometimes the most profitable response.

📊 6. Adjust When They Adjust

Good regulars will notice your strategy too.

If you start attacking their blinds more often, they may defend wider.

If you start 3-betting more, they may begin 4-betting or calling more frequently.

This creates a constant strategic battle.

The goal is not to find one perfect strategy.

The goal is to adapt faster than your opponent.

🔥 7. Use Aggression Strategically

Against regulars, passive poker can become very expensive.

When you have range advantages, nut advantages, or strong blockers, look for opportunities to apply pressure.

But aggression without logic is just spewing chips.

Every bet should have a purpose:

What worse hands call?

What better hands fold?

What bluffs am I representing?

If you can’t answer these questions, reconsider the bet.

♣️ 8. Think in Ranges, Not Hands

Against experienced players, thinking “I have top pair” is not enough.

Ask:

What does my opponent's range look like?

What hands would they raise preflop?

Which hands continue on the flop?

Which hands bet the turn?

Which value combinations reach the river?

Which bluffs are still possible?

Range vs. range thinking will dramatically improve your decisions against competent opponents.

🏆 FINAL THOUGHT

Regulars are not unbeatable.

They simply make fewer obvious mistakes.

Your job is to find the small leaks: overfolding, overbluffing, defending too wide, playing too passively, or becoming predictable.

Don’t try to dominate every hand.

Observe. Adapt. Apply pressure. Exploit.
